Port-au-Prince, August 26, 2025.- While Haiti remains officially an agricultural country, thousands of schoolchildren continue to rely on international assistance to access a daily meal. France has provided €2.5 million to the National School Canteen Programme (PNCS), a crucial aid for the academic year 2025-2026.
Monday, August 25, 2025, the Counsellor for Cooperation and Cultural Action of the Embassy of France, Vincent Hommeril, and the General Coordinator of the PNCS, Kevenot Dorvil, signed a new financing agreement to support school feeding in Haiti. In the amount of EUR 2.5 million, this envelope aims to ensure the continuity of the programme for the academic year 2025-2026.
This support is a continuation of previous commitments: in 2024, France had mobilized €8.5 million for food aid in Haiti, via the PNCS, Solidarités International and the World Food Programme (WFP). Thanks to these funds, nearly 82,000 pupils received a daily meal during the school year 2024-2025.
For French and Haitian partners, school feeding goes beyond nutrition: it is a tool to fight hunger, but also a lever to improve school attendance and strengthen education.
A national paradox
This cooperation highlights a striking contrast. In textbooks, Haitian children still learn that their country is essentially agricultural, with a peasant tradition and fertile land. Yet, in reality, thousands of schoolchildren depend on foreign funding to eat their hunger at school.
This situation underlines the urgency of a national agricultural reform. Only enhanced and more sustained local production will eventually feed Haitian schoolchildren without dependent on external aid.
