Santo Domingo, 3 January 2026.- Dominican President Luis Abinader said that the Dominican Republic is closely following developments in Venezuela and reiterates its refusal to recognize Nicolás Maduro's legitimacy after the July 2024 elections. Building on the Santo Domingo Declaration of August 2024, his Government said it wanted to contribute to the restoration of democracy, peace and national unity in Venezuela.
In an official statement, the Dominican Head of State reiterated his country's firm position in the face of the Venezuelan political crisis. Santo Domingo « never recognized the legitimacy of the proclamation of Nicolás Maduro » At the end of the July 2024 elections, considering that they did not reflect popular will.
Mr. Abinader also recalled the role played by the Dominican Republic in promoting the Santo Domingo Declaration, adopted in August 2024. The text explicitly called for respect for the verdict of the ballot box and a democratic transition in Venezuela.
Underscoring the historical ties between the Dominican and Venezuelan peoples, the President affirmed his country's commitment to actively collaborate in efforts to restore democracy, peace and national understanding. « The Dominican Republic will always be on the side of democracy, anywhere, anytime and in front of anyone »he said, reaffirming a position of principle in a regional context marked by strong tensions.
