Inauguration of a medical oxygen production centre at SONAPI: a strong response to the health crisis

Port-au-Prince, August 26, 2025.- In the face of the current health crisis, the executive inaugurated, on Monday 25 August, a medical oxygen production centre at the Société Nationale des Parcs Industriels (SONAPI). This vital device includes patients in respiratory distress, premature, chronic, resuscitation and surgery.

A result of a collaboration between the Transitional Presidential Council, the Prime Minister, the MSPP and international partners, this centre marks a key step towards Haiti's autonomy in the production of medical oxygen. With a capacity of more than 128 bonbons per day, it will reduce import dependence and improve access for hospitals.

The Minister of Health, Dr. Bertrand Sinal, has confirmed a tariff capped at 4,000 gourdes per bonbonne in public institutions, while some university hospitals will benefit free of charge from production to treat vulnerable patients.

This project, made possible with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Fund, illustrates a concerted governance between the CPT, the Prime Minister and the MSPP, embodying a national and international commitment to public health.
