France: Parliament finally adopts the law on aid to die, the Constitutional Council seized

Paris, July 16, 2026.- The French Parliament finally passed, Wednesday, July 15, the law establishing a right to help die. The National Assembly approved the text at last reading by 291 votes to 241, after several rejections from the Senate.

This reform, initiated following the Citizens' Convention on the End of Life launched by Emmanuel Macron in 2022, allows, under strict conditions, access to help to die for adults with a serious and incurable disease that is life-threatening, provided they are able to express a free and enlightened will.

The procedure provides for a medical assessment and a collegial decision. The patient may withdraw the request at any time. In principle, it will have to administer the lethal product itself, unless physically incapacitated, in which case a doctor or nurse may intervene. Caregivers will retain a conscience clause.

Prior to its entry into force, the text will be examined by the Constitutional Council, seized by Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu in order to verify its compliance with constitutional principles, including those relating to individual freedom and human dignity.
