Port-au-Prince, January 12, 2026.- On 9 January, the Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training (MENFP) formalized the gradual extension of the new curricula in the third cycle of basic education from the school year 2027-2028. This curriculum reform, based on the competency approach, aims to harmonize learning at the national level and to modernise the educational offer.
Through a ministerial decision, the MENFP first confirms the entry into force, since the school year 2024-2025, of four new disciplines in all the institutions of the country: Citizenship Education, Aesthetic and Artistic Education, Physical and Sport Education and Education for Technology and Productive Activities. These subjects are the first milestones in the reform of the fundamental curriculum.
Starting in 2027-2028, the new programmes from seven other disciplines will be introduced in the seventh basic year. The same cohorts will continue with the corresponding programmes in the 8th AF in 2028-2029, then in the 9th AF in 2029-2030, allowing a complete generalization of the 3rd cycle over a period of three years.
The Directorate of Fundamental Education (DEF) is responsible for coordinating, monitoring and providing technical support for implementation, in collaboration with other technical directorates and MENFP partners. For its part, the Directorate of Training and Development (DFP) will have to organize continuing training sessions for teachers, directors and pedagogical coaches in order to ensure effective ownership of curriculum innovations.
The Ministerial Decision also calls on the publishers and designers of textbooks to adapt and update their books under the supervision of the MENFP, in order to ensure their compliance with the new official programs. The Departmental Directorates of Education (DDE) are called upon to ensure the strict application of this reform, which repeals any previous provision to the contrary and marks a structural step in the transformation of the Haitian education system.
