Port-au-Prince, July 15, 2026.- Guest of the Magik Panel this Wednesday, July 15, Sorel Jacinthe, leader of the INITE party, expressed serious reservations about the ongoing electoral process. He denounced certain new requirements imposed on candidates, which he considered to be contrary to the Constitution, and affirmed that elections could not be held until the end of 2026 for technical reasons. He also called on the government, the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) and political parties to correct irregularities in order to preserve the credibility of the process.
The leader of the INITE party, Sorel Jacinthe, believes that the elections planned in Haiti cannot be organised before the end of 2026. Guest of the Magik Panel, he said that the technical constraints make this goal impossible.
Based on his experience as a former Member of Parliament and Senator, he stated that the current schedule does not allow sufficient time to prepare for a credible election. In his view, it would take more time to set up the various stages of the electoral process.
Sorel Jacinthe also criticized certain provisions of the electoral decree, including the requirement that candidates produce a certificate of honour certifying that they have never been convicted or detained in Haiti or abroad for several offences. It considers that this requirement exceeds the conditions laid down in the Constitution and constitutes a legally questionable provision.
The political leader also denounced the obligation to legalize this declaration by a notary, believing that it adds formalities that are not provided for by the Constitution or by law.
While criticizing the government and the Provisional Electoral Council, Sorel Jacinthe argued for a concerted approach. He called on the CEP, the executive and political parties to work together to correct the contested provisions of the decree and to build confidence in the electoral process.
In his view, the objective must be to organise inclusive, transparent and accepted elections by all political actors in order to avoid a new institutional crisis.
