UNEP calls for breaking with growth logic to the detriment of well-being and the environment

Nairobi, 9 December 2025.- On the occasion of its General Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) publishes the 7th edition of its report on global environmental perspectives. Engaging nearly 290 scientists from more than 80 countries, the alert document on the simultaneous aggravation of four major environmental climate crises, biodiversity, pollution and resource management and advocates for an economic model focused on well-being rather than growth alone.

The new UNEP report shows that, despite repeated warnings from the scientific community, human pressure on the planet continues to intensify. Greenhouse gas emissions, which continue to increase, remain the leading cause of climate change, leading to an increase in extreme events and increased vulnerability of populations.

At the same time, the degradation of biodiversity, contamination of air, water and soil, and unsustainable exploitation of natural resources undermine the ecological balances essential for life.

For UNEP, these trends cannot be reversed without a fundamental transformation of production and consumption patterns. The organisation stresses that progress can no longer be assessed solely on the basis of economic growth, but must incorporate indicators related to quality of life, public health, ecosystem resilience and environmental justice. The report stresses the urgent need to rethink political and financial priorities in order to place human well-being and environmental protection at the heart of decisions.
