Port-au-Prince, 10 September 2025.- In the face of an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, the United Nations announced on 9 September an emergency aid of $9 million for Haiti, where gang violence directly threatens the survival of populations and health services.
As armed violence continues to destabilize Port-au-Prince and its surroundings, humanitarian needs are exploding. Hospitals in difficulty, displaced families and communities deprived of essential services are on the front line. In response, the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) released an envelope of $9 million.
This donation will serve to strengthen the humanitarian response in Haiti, particularly assistance to displaced persons, food, clean water and health care. The University Peace Hospital, already weakened by lack of resources and located near areas under gang control, remains one of the few institutions still operational in the capital.
Tom Fletcher, the United Nations head of humanitarian affairs, warned against an imminent collapse of the health system. He praised the " courage and professionalism" of medical personnel, while recalling that the crisis in Haiti is the most underfunded in the world.
This aid is crucial, but it remains far below the real needs, said Fletcher. Of the $908 million required for the 2025 humanitarian response plan, only $105 million was mobilized, leaving a threat to the continuity of vital programmes.
His message to the international community is clear: « We can't close our eyes. We must act, and quickly ».
This funding is a temporary breath for health structures and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), but the scale of the crisis requires a much more sustained international effort. Without rapid and massive mobilization, warn the humanitarian community, the already weakened system is likely to collapse further.
