Sunrise Airways has announced the launch of two new domestic routes between Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haïtien to the cities of Jacmel (South-East) and Jérémie (Grande-Anse). Planned for November 17, 2025, this initiative aims to provide a quick and secure alternative to land movements that have become dangerous due to gang violence on major national roads.
While national roads linking the capital to the Great South and the Great North are largely controlled by armed groups, land travel has become a real risk route. The cities of Jacmel and Jérémie, already isolated by geography, are now subject to an increased enclave which penalises the economic exchanges and the movements of the inhabitants.
In response, Sunrise Airways intends to play a strategic role in facilitating internal connectivity. The new flights will be operated five days a week, connecting the capital with the departments of South East and Grande Anse. According to the company, this decision responds to an urgent need for secure mobility, in a context of collapse of road transport.
The announcement came at a time when the Transitional Presidential Council (CPT), by the voice of Councillor-President Leslie Voltaire, had promised the reopening of at least one national road before the end of his term of office. However, traffic between the major regions of the country remains chaotic, and the persistent threat of kidnapping continues to paralyse Haitian society.
If these new air links offer hope of opening up, it remains to be seen whether they can be maintained in a country that is still under threat from insecurity and economic difficulties.
