Port-au-Prince, October 28, 2025.- In the face of the imminent threat of Hurricane Melissa, classified as category 5, the Haitian authorities intensified their response mechanism on Tuesday 28 October 2025. In the context of the 27th edition of the "Mardis de la Nation", the National Emergency Operations Centre (COUN) has detailed the preventive and assistance measures put in place to protect the populations, especially those in the most exposed areas, while calling on the population to be vigilant, prudent and solidarity-based.

Now classified as category 5, storm Melissa moves slowly to Haiti with winds of up to 295 km/h and precipitation estimated at over 400 mm. The authorities warn against the risks of flooding, landslides and rising streams.

The Great South is placed under red watch, while the South-East, West, Artibonite and part of the North-West Point are on orange alert. Emergency measures have been taken to protect vulnerable populations, such as the opening of reception centres, the deployment of food and hygiene stocks, and the transfer of monetary aid through publicly recognized electronic wallets.

The coordination of operations involves several key ministries, including Public Works, Transport and Communications, Economy and Finance, Social and Labour Affairs, Environment, Agriculture and Public Health and Population. The aim of this joint mobilization is to limit loss of life and damage to property.

By Monday, 20 October, the National Risk and Disaster Management Committee had been activated to anticipate the effects of the hurricane, allowing for better preparation and faster response. Authorities continue to assess the most exposed areas and adjust real-time measures to effectively protect the population.

The Government calls on the people to remain cautious, strictly follow security instructions and show solidarity. Every act of prevention can help save lives as the country prepares for Hurricane Melissa, considered one of the most dangerous weather events in recent years.
