Port-au-Prince, December 20, 2025.- The Ministry of Public Health and Population announced the launch of the national project « Pwòpte »on 17 December, a national sanitation programme targeting civilian prisons, camps for internally displaced persons and departmental hospitals, in order to curb the spread of infectious diseases and prevent the risk of epidemics related to unsafe living conditions.
The project « Pwòpte » It is divided into several concrete actions. In civilian prisons, it provides for the decontamination of dormitories and sanitary facilities, fumigation against vectors and rehabilitation of drinking water points. For internally displaced persons camps, the programme includes community clean-up campaigns, waste management and the strengthening of WASH infrastructure, while raising awareness of the importance of hygiene.
At the same time, mobile clinics will be deployed to screen for infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and scab, as well as to distribute essential drugs to inmates and camp residents. Departmental hospitals will benefit from targeted interventions for the disinfection of critical areas and the safe disposal of biomedical waste, thereby strengthening prevention against epidemics and contributing to sustainable public health improvements.
Through its Directorate for Health Promotion and Environmental Protection (DPSPE), the Ministry of Health is strengthening health conditions in prisons, internally displaced persons camps and departmental hospitals, limiting the spread of infectious diseases and protecting vulnerable populations, while suggesting that the real scale of change will depend on the continuity and rigour of the actions implemented.
