Angry Lyceans: Regularization of Teachers Fires Powders

Port-au-Prince, October 28, 2025.- Several high schools in Port-au-Prince, including Jean-Marie Vincent and Antoine-Ismery, are paralyzed by a strike triggered after the arrival of new teachers appointed while others are still waiting for their regularization. This led to a series of protests and clashes between high school students and law enforcement.

For several days, scenes of panic and tension have been observed in the Haitian capital. Angry high school students descend into the streets, block traffic and sometimes violently clash with law enforcement officials. These events, part of some public schools, are beginning to affect other private schools.

Invited this Tuesday, October 28 on the air of Magik 9, Kenson Délice, representative of the National Union of Normaliennes and Normalians of Haiti (UNNOEH), confirmed that the high schools Jean-Marie Vincent and Antoine-Ismery are currently on strike. He explained that the tension had arisen from the appointment of new teachers, while several other teachers who had been in office for years had still not been regularized. In the face of this feeling of injustice, the teachers suspended their courses, causing spontaneous mobilization of the students.

According to Mr Délice, this is not yet a general strike affecting the entire public education system, but it warns against a risk of escalation if the government does not quickly take concrete steps to honour its commitments to teaching staff.
