Ouragan Melissa : Haiti under high vigilance as the system intensifyes near Jamaica

Port-au-Prince, October 28, 2025.- Hurricane Melissa, now category 5, continues its destructive trajectory in the Caribbean, causing heavy rains and violent winds on the south of Haiti. The departments of the South, Grand Anse and Nippes are placed in red alert, while the West, Artibonite and North-West remain on orange alert. The authorities call for the utmost caution in the face of the risks of flooding, landslides and heavy sills.

According to Sterlin Marcelin, coordinator of the Hydrometeorological Unit of Haiti (UHM), Hurricane Melissa was this Tuesday morning about 180 kilometres west-southwest of Jamaica. The phenomenon, described as« extremely dangerous »already affects the region with strong winds, torrential rains and a very turbulent sea.

« The system currently produces extremely dangerous weather conditions for Jamaica and other neighbouring islands, including Cuba. It starts heading north, then northeast », said Mr. Marcelin on Magik9 this Tuesday, October 28, 2025.

Since early this morning, Haiti has been hit by several rain strips associated with the system, causing significant accumulations, especially in the Great South. The Civil Protection maintains the red vigilance on the departments of the South, the Great Anse and the Nippes, where already saturated soils could yield to any additional rainy episode.

The departments of the West, Artibonite and North-West are placed in orange alertness due to the high risk of overflows and mud flows. The authorities also report a total ban on shipping, as the sea is extremely agitated.

For safety reasons, the National Civil Aviation Office (OFNAC) has decided to temporarily suspend domestic and international flights. Citizens are encouraged to avoid non-essential displacement and to follow official instructions pending removal from the system.
