Vatican City, 23 June 2025.- In the aftermath of the American strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, Pope Leo XIV issued an urgent appeal for peace on Sunday, June 22. During the prayer of the Angelus, he urged the international community to avoid escalation and to favour the diplomatic path.
« Let us end the tragedy of the war before it becomes an irreparable gulf. », he declared from the pontifical apartments, according to Vatican News.
The sovereign pontiff expressed particular concern about the worsening of the conflict between Israel and Iran, and stressed the need not to forget civilians, especially in Gaza, who face daily suffering. He also stressed the urgency of enhanced humanitarian support in the most affected areas.
« Today, more than ever, humanity cries and invokes peace »he insisted, cautioning against warlike discourses and calling world leaders to responsibility.
For the Pope, there is no conflict « far away » when human dignity is at stake.
