Haiti-Security : Jacmeliens live in the nostalgia of the past

Jacmel, 21 June 2025.- The multifaceted crisis that the country is experiencing not only affects the Haitian capital, it has serious repercussions on several provincial cities including Jacmel. This Saturday morning, at the communal market of the locality Beaudouin, Infos Nation gathered some testimonies that highlight the growing distress of citizens in the face of the security and socio-economic crisis that is shaking Haiti.

Anxiety, frustration, nostalgia... these themes served as a backdrop for the testimonies of this fringe of the Jacmelian community. Indeed, several residents admit that they no longer recognize their city or their daily lives, today marked by insecurity and rising prices for basic necessities. "We do not ask much, just the strict minimum so that we can live", bitterly implores a merchant who has been in the market for more than five years.

Essential goods are now inaccessible to a large part of the population because of the price boom. The same applies to public transport tariffs which make travel much more difficult for most citizens.

The landmark testimony of *François Jean breaks the hope of reviving certain moments "d-antan". It evokes with emotion a past that has passed: "We used to sleep peacefully in the beautiful star on our galleries. Today, this tranquillity is nothing more than a distant memory, because of the insecurity which gangnes the region".

However, *François Jean said that he recognized the efforts made by law enforcement forces on day-to-day to try to restore peace and security in the region. _"I hope, with all my heart, that peace will return to the country, especially here, in the city of Alcibiade Pommayrac, for the inhabitants of Jacmel are lovers of peace," he concludes, the hope always blazed to the body.

It should be noted that the violence of armed gangs has displaced many people within the country. Some fled the capital to quieter provincial cities, including Jacmel. This creates pressure on infrastructure already weakened by the rural exodus of the old light city following the terrible earthquake of 2010.
