Former Minister of Public Works, Transport and Communications, Frantz Verella
Great North, January 6, 2026.- Transforming the Great North into « garden on the sea » This is the objective of the development plan presented by the former Minister of Public Works, Frantz Verella. Focused on the green and blue economy, the project focuses on new ports, including a deep water port in the Môle-Saint-Nicolas, to connect Haiti to Caribbean, North American and European markets.
Speaking at the morning of Magik9 on Tuesday 6 January 2026, Frantz Verella, former Minister of Public Works, Transport and Communications (MTPTC), outlined the development plan for the Far North. According to him, the strategy is to capitalize on the northern maritime façade to make it real commercial gateways to the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic, North America and Europe.
At the heart of the scheme is the construction of two new ports, allowing to refurbish the port of Cap-Haitien, including the current draught, about nine meters prevents the reception of Panamax vessels, requiring at least 16 meters and an equivalent access channel.
At the same time, studies have been carried out on the creation of a port at the Môle-Saint-Nicolas, designed as a strategic platform directly linking the marine flows from the Panama Canal to Europe and North America. In the long term, the ambition is to develop a deep water port with a draught of 16 to 18 metres, multi-purpose wharves and related infrastructure to support structural projects, particularly for the Northeast.
This global plan, Mr Verella stressed, aims to lay the foundations for a sustainable economy, combining maritime logistics, territorial development and regional integration.
