The Parc Quisqueya, protected area of Fonds Parisiens, invaded by individuals

The director of the Quisqueya Nature Park, Geffrard Jean

Fonds Parisien, April 7, 2026.-The Parc naturel Quisqueya, located in Fonds Parisien, is facing an illegal attempt by individuals who entered the area on March 22. According to its director, Geffrard Jean, these intrusions threaten a fragile and protected ecosystem at the heart of a major biological corridor in the Caribbean.

The alert is launched on Tuesday 7 April around the Quisqueya Natural Park, a strategic ecological area located in the commune of Fonds Parisien. Its director, Geffrard Jean, in an interview with Magik9, denounces the recent intrusion of a group of individuals into this protected area, with alleged intentions of illegal occupation and exploitation.

According to his reports, these persons entered the park on Sunday, 22 March, setting up border crossings in certain areas, installing makeshift shelters and attempting to establish prohibited activities or exploitation of natural resources.

The Quisqueya Park is nevertheless an area of major ecological importance.

Located near Lake Azuei, the country's largest lake with an area of approximately 170 km2, it enjoys a particular microclimate characterized by strong evapotranspiration and constant winds.

This environment fosters a unique biodiversity, including cactus, dagaves, medicinal plants and protected animal species such as iguanas and turtles.

Integrated into a vast biological corridor linking several wetlands between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, the park plays a key role in regional climate balance.

Any degradation of this space could have a significant impact on the local ecosystem.

Beyond environmental protection, the park is also intended as a youth training centre. Initiatives are being carried out to enhance the value of natural resources through their transformation into economic products, such as juices, jams and even drinks based on d

Faced with this situation, Geffrard Jean deplores the lack of reaction of the authorities, despite the steps taken to the Ministry of the Environment. Nevertheless, he welcomed the mobilization of the inhabitants of Fonds Parisien, which had helped to repel the invaders and protect this natural space.

The future of Quisqueya Park now depends on concrete measures to ensure its protection in the face of increasing human pressures.
