United States to defend the GST of Haitians

New York, September 4, 2025.- The Attorney General of New York, Letitia James, accompanied by 17 other states, mobilized to defend the Temporary Protection Status (TPS) granted to Haitian nationals. This action comes as the Department of Homeland Security plans to put an end to this programme, endangering thousands of Haitian families living in the United States.

Established after the 2010 earthquake, the GST still protects many Haitians today, despite the persistence of violence, kidnapping and instability in Haiti. In the face of the threat of revocation, Letitia James filed an amicus curiae brief with a Washington D.C. court, supported by several states, including California, Massachusetts, New Jersey and the federal capital.

Prosecutors stress the negative impact that an end to the GST would have, both humanitarianly and economically, stressing that Haitians contribute $4.4 billion a year to the US economy.

It should be noted that a federal judge in Brooklyn granted a temporary suspension of the end of the GST, extending the coverage for six months. This decision allows the families concerned to remain together pending a final judicial outcome.
