Port-au-Prince, January 12, 2026.- On the occasion of the 16th anniversary of the 2010 earthquake, the Transitional Presidential Council (CPT) and the Haitian government paid tribute to more than 280,000 victims at a ceremony held at the National Palace in Port-au-Prince. In the presence of the Prime Minister, members of the government, the Director General of the National Police and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Haiti, the Councillor President Laurent Saint-Cyr proceeded to deposit a shem of flowers. In his speech, he recalled: « Ayiti se wozo, li foldye men li pa p kase. 2010 pa dwe sélman kite doulè, men nou dwe aprann leson yo. »
Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé stressed the importance of unity and hope for successful reconstruction: « On this day of recollection, the Nation bows to the memory of lost lives and shares the pain of the families who have been tried. Together, let us commit ourselves to building a standing Haiti, based on peace, stability and solidarity. » He recalled that mourning and hope must coexist to build a more resilient nation, drawing lessons from 2010 to strengthen governance and collective commitment.
This commemoration reaffirmed that memory, solidarity and collective responsibility are essential to rebuild Haiti. She also recalled the persistent challenges, particularly with regard to the reconstruction of the National Palace, whose competition won by Raco in 2020 was not followed. Beyond infrastructure, this symbol of sovereignty represents the resilience and identity of the country in its quest for a more stable future.
