In an overwhelming report, the United Nations (UN) warns about the gravity of the security crisis in Haiti, marked by summary executions, gang brutality and the collapse of public institutions. In an interview with UN Info, independent expert William O

In particular, he mentioned the increasing recruitment of children into gangs, as well as the sexual abuse of many girls. « It's a real disaster for Haiti to have youth so exposed to violence, and teens with lifetime attacks at 15 or 16 years old », he said.

Extreme violence saves no one, he continued, stressing that even older people are targeted. He cited 15 individuals suspected of collaborating with the police, brutally executed and abandoned in the streets.

One of the reasons for this was the lack of a sufficient police force. — barely 11,000 agents for a population of 11 million inhabitants. Faced with this impotence, the summary executions carried out by self-defence groups are multiplying, a symptom, according to him, of deep collective despair.

He also criticized the use of suicide drones by the Haitian National Police, which he considered ineffective. Instead, he pleads for the intervention of a robust, targeted and well-equipped force, capable of dismantling gangs within a few weeks.

For the expert, these armed groups do not follow any political ideology: their only driving force is the search for money, violence, women and material goods.
