Moscow, July 28, 2025.- Dmitri Medvedev, former Russian president and close ally of Vladimir Putin, vigorously rejected Donald Trump's new ultimatum, which grants Russia a 10- to 12-day period to accept a ceasefire in Ukraine, under penalty of heavy sanctions. Medvedev denounced a « direct threat » against Global Stability and « Not to war ». Meanwhile, the Kremlin remains officially silent, as Russia multiplies the strikes on Ukraine.
In a statement published on the X network, Dmitri Medvedev, today Vice-President of the Russian Security Council, described Trump as « geopolitical blackmail » Dangerous. According to him, each Western ultimatum brings the world closer to a global confrontation. He believes that Russia will not yield to any external pressure, denouncing an American attempt to divert attention from its own internal crises.
The Kremlin remains officially silent
No direct statement by Vladimir Putin has been made so far. However, Russian officials, under cover of anonymity, recall that Russia had already rejected Trump's previous 50-day ultimatum. They denounce a diplomacy of threat and reaffirm their preference for negotiations without preconditions.
On July 28, 2025, Donald Trump, on a trip to Scotland, reduced his own initial time limit from 50 days to a compressed period of 10 to 12 days, setting a deadline for August 7–9. In case of Russian inaction, it promises severe trade sanctions: 100 per cent tariffs on Moscow allies and measures against Russian oil importers. He also said: « Disappointed » by Vladimir Putin, claiming that he no longer wants to enter into direct negotiations.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, through his Chief of Staff, praised this pressure as a useful signal of firmness. European and American officials expressed cautious support, while questioning the effectiveness of an ultimatum without a concrete diplomatic plan.
A military response instead of a compromise
Rather than yielding, Russia intensified its military operations. Drone and missile strikes targeted several Ukrainian cities, causing civilian casualties despite defence efforts. This escalation is interpreted as a direct challenge to the US coercive strategy.
An Inflexible Kremlin Facing Threats
For analysts, Putin's apparent silence is not a sign of weakness, but of contempt. The Kremlin would remain focused on its strategic objectives: maintaining Russian influence in Ukraine, securing territorial gains, and weakening Kiev's military capabilities. In Moscow's view, Trump's pressure is perceived as ineffective or even counterproductive.
