Port-au-Prince, September 9, 2025.- Tom Fletcher, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs of the United Nations (UN) arrived in Port-au-Prince on Monday, September 8, to meet with Haitian authorities, communities and international partners to assess the humanitarian situation aggravated by gang violence.
Tom Fletcher began his mission in Haiti to see the reality on the ground and to strengthen the coordination of international aid.
« I have just arrived in Haiti, where I will meet with communities, front-line stakeholders, partners and authorities. Needs are increasing while funding is at historically low levels. We must strive to protect lives and restore hope », was read in a message published on his official X account.
Its mission is to identify urgent needs and support the efforts of local authorities to respond to the crisis.
As a result, gang violence killed nearly 5,000 people between October 2024 and June 2025, while more than one million people are displaced, according to the United Nations. The health system is overloaded, and access to humanitarian aid remains limited.
Fletcher will meet directly with communities, front-line stakeholders, partners and authorities to assess needs and coordinate humanitarian response. The main challenge is to ensure concrete and immediate support for vulnerable populations and to mobilize more international resources.
Tom Fletcher's visit marks a key moment for the humanitarian response in Haiti. Its objective is to strengthen coordination between the United Nations, the Haitian authorities and international partners in order to provide rapid and effective solutions to a major humanitarian crisis.
