Panamaribo, 28 December 2025.- A man killed nine people, including five children, in a stabbing attack on the night of 27-28 December east of Paramaribo, Suriname. The suspect, who was identified as mentally ill, was injured and arrested by the police. The authorities promise support to bereaved families.
A tragedy of a rare violence struck Suriname on the night of Saturday to Sunday. According to the police, a male individual stabbed nine people, four adults and five children to death in the district of Commewijne, east of the capital Paramaribo. One adult and one child were also seriously injured and hospitalized.
In response to the incident, the police were confronted with the attack of the suspect, armed with a sharp object. The police used their gun to neutralize him. Injured in the legs, the man was admitted to the emergency room and placed under police surveillance.
Suriname's president, Jenny Geerlings-Simons, confirmed that the assailant had killed her own children and neighbours. Evidence gathered by the local press refers to mental disorders, which will have to be confirmed by the ongoing investigation.
In an official statement, the Head of State expressed deep compassion for the families affected and announced support measures. The government will pay funeral expenses and mobilize psychological and social support for the victims' relatives.
This tragedy comes at a holiday period marked by solidarity and hope, recalled the President, stressing the national impact of this tragedy. Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof also expressed his condolences to the people of Suriname.
