Port-au-Prince, July 9, 2025.- On the occasion of the Day of Europe and the departure of the Ambassador of the European Union (EU), Stefano Gatto, the Haitian government expressed on Tuesday 8 July its gratitude for the EU's continued commitment to Haiti, as well as for the exemplary diplomatic work of the Italian diplomat. The Haitian State reaffirmed its commitment to strengthen its strategic cooperation with the EU, based on partnership, mutual respect and solidarity.

A lunch cocktail was held in Petion-Ville in honour of Mr Gatto, in the presence of Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils Aimé, members of the Government, diplomats and representatives of international organizations.

In office since December 2022, Stefano Gatto was distinguished by his commitment to political dialogue, bilateral cooperation and the promotion of shared democratic values between Haiti and the European Union. In February 2025, he had acknowledged the challenges encountered during his tenure, in particular the disturbances that forced the temporary closure of the offices of the EU Delegation in Haiti.

Despite this difficult context, the EU continued its actions on the ground, supported by a significant increase in funding. According to the diplomat, approximately EUR 600 million is currently committed to infrastructure, social protection, nutrition and education projects, while an additional EUR 130 million remains to be committed.

Speaking, the Prime Minister greeted Stefano Gatto as a « faithful and committed partner », stressing the key role of the European Union in the development of the country. He also expressed the hope that this cooperation would be further strengthened in a spirit of respect and solidarity. Gatto, a career diplomat, has held several high-level positions at international level, including in Latin America, where he has demonstrated himself in economic cooperation and electoral observation missions.
