Gang threat: Marines land, Haiti sinks

Port-au-Prince, August 31, 2025.- A new contingent of Marines arrived in Port-au-Prince this weekend to strengthen the security of the US Embassy in Haiti. Their mission includes not only the protection of diplomatic installations, but also the coordination of possible rotation of troops already present and support for emergency operations. This decision comes at a time when armed attacks are increasing in the vicinity of the embassy, highlighting the concerns of Washington and the international community about the escalation of gang violence.

According to a press release, the US embassy states that this support allows it to maintain its essential activities and to continue its assistance to the National Police of Haiti (PNH) and to the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP), « who work courageously across the country ». The diplomatic mission remains open, but now operates in a restricted, emergency-oriented mode.

This arrival of Marines occurs in a context of high security pressure. Armed gangs, increasingly active around the diplomatic zone, directly threaten the facilities of the United States Embassy in Tabarre. In the face of this dizzying rise in insecurity, the United States, in consultation with several partner countries, is considering adapting its approach: replacing the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) with a real force dedicated to gang suppression.

A signal that illustrates the urgency and gravity of the security situation in Haiti, where the capital remains the scene of constant confrontations and targeted violence.
