The spirit above AI: UNESCO and Colombia join forces to promote critical media education in the digital age

Cartagena, November 6, 2025.- On 23 and 24 October 2025, Cartagena from India, Colombia, hosted the World Conference of Media and Information Education Week (EMI), organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Republic of Colombia. Placed under the theme « The spirit above AI, Media and information education in digital spaces »This edition highlighted the challenges and opportunities associated with the rise of artificial intelligence in the media sphere.

Each year, from 24 to 31 October, World Media and Information Week mobilizes actors from around the world around the same goal: to strengthen citizens' capacity to understand, analyse and use information critically. The 2025 edition was distinguished by its ambition to explore the interactions between artificial intelligence (AI) and media and information education (EMI), at a time when the content generated by AI is profoundly redefining the digital landscape.

Organized in a hybrid format, the Cartagena Conference brought together experts, teachers, researchers, journalists and politicians to discuss the essential role of the NDE in preserving the critical spirit and freedom of expression in the age of algorithms. Discussions focused on the need to develop inclusive digital skills, protect citizens from misinformation and promote the ethical use of artificial intelligence in education and the media.

By combining the human spirit with technology, UNESCO reaffirms that the future of digital must be guided not by machine, but by human intelligence, creativity and responsibility. This message, at the heart of World Media and Information Week, recalls that in terms of knowledge and discernment, the spirit must always remain above AI.
