Port-au-Prince, August 4, 2025.- Recent statements by the Minister of National Education and Vocational Training, Antoine Augustine, affirming that the Haitian state has no faith and that it is impossible to force students to pray in Republican schools, mark a turning point in the debate on secularism in Haiti. By insisting that « we are neither in Iran nor in the Vatican »The Minister recalls that the Haitian state is constitutionally secular. However, this development, both logical and legitimate, has given rise to serious questions and criticism, as it seems to contradict certain official practices.
Indeed, it is difficult to ignore that successive presidents – including those adopting the title during the transition – systematically attend Te Deums at major state ceremonies. These solemn Masses, imprinted with religious symbolism, are perceived by many as a blessing necessary for any political enterprise. Yet, if the state should not impose prayer on school, why does it continue to associate its legitimacy with religious rituals?
This incoherence between political discourse and protocol actions feeds a harmful blur around the principle of secularism. For secularism is not the enemy of faith: it is the guarantor. It allows everyone – believing or not – to evolve freely in public space, without religious pressure. School, as a republican institution, cannot be a place of indoctrination or a place where spiritual practices are imposed.
By defending this principle, the minister is taking a courageous step towards necessary clarification. But for this position to have weight, it must be consistently carried at all levels of the state. Respect for religious neutrality must be expressed both in the classes and in the major official ceremonies. Otherwise, the message sent remains ambiguous: a school that advocates neutrality, but a state that is blessed.
Haiti, a country with deep spiritual roots, must learn to distinguish between personal faith and institutional neutrality. It is at this price that we will build a strong republican state that respects all beliefs and truly serves all.
