Port-au-Prince, August 4, 2025.- On approaching the rotation at the head of the Transitional Presidential Council (CPT), Fritz Alphonse Jean, his current coordinator, sounds the alarm. In an interview with Radio Métropole on Monday, August 4, he confirmed his intention to surrender the presidency to Laurent Saint-Cyr, in accordance with the rotating governance agreement. But it is concerned about increasingly concentrated power in the private sector.
Fritz Jean warns about an institutional drift: with Laurent Saint-Cyr, future president of the CPT, and Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, current Prime Minister, both from the same economic milieu, he fears a « Total State capture » by an elite that he considers to be part of the current chaos. « It is a legitimate concern to see the two heads of the executive come from the same private sector. »he said, denouncing a threat to democratic balance.
The former Governor of the Central Bank recalls that he has already denounced the influence of the private sector on the institutions in his work published since 2012. It warns against a loss of credibility of the transition if it appears dominated by particular interests, to the detriment of the common good.
Fritz Jean also criticized the recent statements of the US State Department, which referred to an alleged plot to overthrow the Prime Minister. He sees it as an attempt at foreign interference and recalls that the CPT has the sovereign right to criticize and remove the head of government if necessary. « It's not a conspiracy, it's our responsibility. »He insisted.
As the security and humanitarian crisis worsens, this warning by Fritz Jean highlights the internal tensions and structural imbalances of an already fragile transitional power. It remains to be seen whether this alert will lead to a questioning or tightening of the power relations within the CPT.
