Washington, July 3, 2025.-The security situation in Haiti continues to alarm the international community. Despite the presence of the Multinational Support Mission in Haiti (MSS), led by Kenya, armed gangs continue their abuses and extend their grip on the national territory.
At the United Nations Security Council meeting held yesterday in New York, the representatives of Panama and Haiti made an urgent appeal to the international community to take action towards a speedy restoration of security.
The MSS, whose mission is to restore order, is overwhelmed by the scale of the crisis. It suffers from a staggering lack of staff and logistical resources, limiting its effectiveness in the face of the rise of gangs. The latter move freely between departments, confronting the law enforcement forces with comparable means. There is no road, air, land or sea control mechanism in place to curb their progress across the territory.
Indeed, several countries have promised reinforcements, but deployment delays are holding back the operation, keeping the mission well below its targets. Meanwhile, violence continues to plague. On 3 July 2025, the city of Lascahobas was attacked by heavily armed men, illustrating the seriousness of the situation on the ground.
The representative of Panama called for concrete and urgent actions: « Continuing to accumulate reports describing an ever more tragic reality, marked by the increase in assassinations, is no longer an option. Time to act », he declared firmly.
For his part, the Ambassador of Haiti, Eric Pierre, stressed the urgency of moving from speeches to deeds. He reiterated Haiti's support for the proposal of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, to strengthen logistical and financial support for the multinational mission in order to better respond to the security emergency.
