Haiti: When a working day does not even pay a gallon of gasoline

Manganese Saint-Cyr

Port-au-Prince, April 6, 2026.- Speaker on Radio Télévision Magik 9 this Monday, April 6, 2026, the trade unionist Fignolé Saint-Cyr draws the alarm bell: with a daily wage of 685 gourdes against 725 gourdes for a gallon of gasolin, the rise in fuel prices worsens the precariousness of textile workers already weakened by the security crisis.

The government's decision to increase oil prices continues to generate strong reactions in the textile sector. Invited to Magik morning9, Fignolé Saint-Cyr denounced a measure « wrong » in an already critical socio-economic context.

The trade unionist points out a striking imbalance: the daily basic wage of a textile worker is set at 685 gourdes, while the gallon of gasolin now reaches 725 gourdes. A situation he considers « Unbearable »Recalling that fuel is a cross-cutting product whose increase directly impacts the cost of living.

Beyond the question of prices, Mr Saint-Cyr also pointed out that there was no agreement. According to him, neither the government nor the Advisory Council set up by the Primature involved the unions in the decision-making process. He even described this structure as « can », considering that it does not take into account the realities of the field.

The security crisis further aggravates the situation. In several industrial areas, working hours have been halved. The only exception is the Codevi Industrial Park, where activities are normally ongoing. In Caracol Industrial Park, the number of workers rose from about 15,000 to only 4,000, illustrating the extent of the decline in the sector.

Faced with this situation, the trade unionist calls for a popular mobilization to force the authorities to reconsider their decision. For him, without rapid adjustment, the increase in fuels could worsen the precariousness of workers and further weaken the national economy.
