Florida/discriminatory practices: organizations denounce the arrest of more than 6,000 immigrants

Since the beginning of the year, more than 6,000 people suspected of being in an irregular situation have been arrested in Florida as part of a migration policy reinforced by the Trump administration. This campaign, supported by some legal agreements, allows local forces to perform federal immigration functions.

Migrant rights organizations denounce the abuse of ethnic profiling, violations of constitutional rights and arbitrary arrests, sometimes even of United States citizens. They are also concerned about a climate of fear affecting public security and cooperation with the authorities.

Economically, the arrest campaign already affects sectors such as agriculture and construction, which face labour shortages. Despite criticism, the Florida authorities welcome the effectiveness of this strategy, which they intend to intensify.
