Washington, 7 July 2025.- On Monday, the Trump administration formalized its determination to end the Temporary Protection Status (TPS) of over seventy thousand (70,000) nationals of Honduras and Nicaragua. This measure, which is expected in September, aims to remove these migrants from their right of temporary residence in the United States unless they have another legal status.
These protections had been put in place as part of the Humanitarian Word programme, established by former President Joe Biden, to provide shelter for people from countries facing major crises. The new administration now intends to tighten this policy, as part of a broader migration offensive, described by Donald Trump as « largest campaign of expulsions from US history ».
Established by the US Congress in 1990, the GST allows foreigners to stay temporarily in the United States if their home country is affected by conflict, natural disaster or any other situation that makes their return dangerous. Under Biden, this scheme had been extended to hundreds of thousands of migrants, including from Haiti and Venezuela.
As a result, the decision to restrict it for Hondurans and Nicaraguans has been strongly criticized, notably by Senator Devocrat of Nevada, Catherine Cortez Masto. It denounces an unfair measure against families established in the country since the 1990s, which, in its view, has long contributed to American society and economy. It considered that their expulsion would in no way enhance the security of the country.
