Montego Bay, July 7, 2025.- At the 49th ordinary meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the situation in Haiti was central to the discussions. The current President of CARICOM, the Jamaican Prime Minister, Mr. Andrew Holness, denounced the slow pace of the international community's assistance to Haiti.
At this meeting, held from Sunday 6 to Tuesday 8 July, in Montego Bay, Jamaica, Andrew Holness urged CARICOM member countries to redouble their efforts to mobilize concrete support for Haiti. « We cannot leave our Haitian brothers and sisters at the mercy of gangs »he insisted.
For her part, the Prime Minister of Barbados, Ms. Mia Mottley, former President of Caricom, made an urgent appeal to the citizens of CARICOM member countries to encourage their government to recognize the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) as the supreme court. To date, only five of the eleven eligible countries have adopted this body as a court of last resort.
In addition, Ms. Mia Mottley described the adoption of the CCJ as an act of legal emancipation, allowing a break with the colonial legacy, embodied by the Privy Council of London. It urged several countries, including Haiti and Jamaica, to undertake constitutional reforms necessary for this transition, including through popular referendums.
