Category 2: Hurricane Melissa threatens Haiti, the government places two departments on red alert

Presidential advisers Leslie Voltaire and Fritz Alphonse Jean, accompanied by ministers Paul Antoine Bien-Aimé (Interior) and Bertrand Sinal (Public Health), participated, on Saturday, October 25, 2025, in a press briefing at the National Emergency Operations Centre (COUN), in Clersine, around the passage of Hurricane Mélissa on Haiti. On behalf of the Prime Minister, the Minister Bien-Aimé declared the red alert on the departments of the South and the Grand-Anse, the main areas threatened by this system now classified hurricane category 2. The authorities call on the public to be cautious and to follow the instructions of Civil Protection.

 

According to the Director General of Civil Protection, Emmanuel Pierre, as well as the experts of the Hydrometeorological Unit of Haiti, Marie Carmelle Valcourt Chéry and Wilner Polydor, the major hurricane Melissa will bring heavy rains and strong winds on the Great South during the weekend and at the beginning of the week. The presence of the Transitional Presidential Council (CPT) at this meeting attests to the government's willingness to remain with the population at these critical moments, while a decree on the management of national emergencies is in preparation.
