On August 15, 2025, Cap-Haitien celebrates both the patronal feast dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption and its 355 years of foundation. A solemn Mass gathered faithful and authorities at Notre Dame Cathedral, the spiritual heart of the city. While religious fervour remains intact, the once vibrant rural festivals have lost their radiance as a result of persistent insecurity.

Cap-Haitien, nicknamed the « Christophian City », lives every 15 August at the rhythm of his history and faith. This year, the date was particularly bright: 355 years of existence, celebrated in a context marked by daily challenges.

At the centre of the festivities, Notre-Dame Cathedral of Cap-Haitien welcomed a solemn Eucharist. The faithful, coming from various quarters and even other departments, gathered to honor the Virgin of the Assumption, protector of the city. In his homily, the clergy recalled the importance of remaining united in faith and solidarity, in the face of the hardships of the city in particular, the country in general.

In the past, this day was not limited to the religious aspect. The country parties, organized in different parts of the country, attracted crowds who came to dance, share and enjoy cultural activities. But this tradition, real social and economic lung, stiole. Insecurity, ubiquitous, hinders gatherings and deprives the inhabitants of a space of popular expression that beats the heart of cities.

For many, however, August 15 remains a moment of pride and memory. Between religious fervour and nostalgia for the joys of Dantan, the city retains the hope of one day regaining harmony between faith, culture and security, so that future generations can live fully the soul of Cap-Haitien.
