Port-au-Prince, September 4, 2025.- Invited to the show Dekanté on Radio Télé Ginen, ASPAEDH spokesman, Fedner Confident, described the school year 2024-2025 as « One of the most difficult » and calls on the State to assume its responsibilities for the start of October 1, 2025.
Thursday, September 4, Fedner Confident, spokesperson for the Association of Parents of Haitian Students (ASPAEDH), was received on the show Dekanté hosted by Sony Destiné and Jean Wesly Alexis. In his speech, he noted an alarming finding of education in Haiti.
According to him, insecurity has paralysed nearly forty schools in the metropolitan area, while more than one million displaced people live in precarious conditions, preventing thousands of children from going to school. In total, more than half a million pupils were unable to attend school during the academic year 2024-2025.
Fedner Confident also pointed out the lack of planning by the authorities, accused of improvising educational policy. According to an ASPAEDH survey, 65% of public schools are in poor condition, and private education dominates largely (83% compared with only 17% for the public). He recalled that the majority of private schools belong to State officials, which, in his view, poses a problem of ethics and transparency.
At the same time, he stressed the heavy financial burden borne by parents. He recalled that a decree, issued under the Garry Conille government, provided for a 14th month's pay for civil servants to support school enrolment, but that this measure had never been implemented. According to him, if a real plan including the National Education Fund (NEF) were actually implemented, many of these difficulties could have been alleviated.
After his intervention, Fedner Confident urged the authorities to put education at the centre of public policy. The ASPAEDH hopes that the new school year 2025-2026 will not repeat the failures of the past year, but rather become the starting point for a new dynamic in favour of pupils and the future of the country.
