Port-au-Prince, March 31, 2026.- An international scientific study has just broken the taboo on capillary extensions: 17 substances related to breast cancer and hormonal disruptors have been detected in wigs and wicks. In direct contact with the scalp, these dangerous chemicals threaten the health of millions of women due to the lack of strict regulations.
The alert was launched by the Journal of the American Chemical Society after the analysis of 43 samples of wigs and clip extensions. Researchers discovered an explosive cocktail of 170 chemicals, 48 of which are classified as dangerous by the United Nations. More worryingly, carcinogens have been identified in almost all of the products tested.
The danger lies in the prolonged use of these « Fo Cheve », which remain in contact with the skin for weeks. Substances such as phenol or phthalates infiltrate the body, causing hormonal disorders and reproductive disorders. Almost 10% of products even contained highly toxic flame retardant plastics.
Elissia Franklin, the main author of the study, points to the lack of transparency of manufacturers who are not subject to any stringent safety requirements. While the global market for extensions is booming, companies often favour profit at the expense of the health of consumers, who ignore the actual composition of their trim.
Faced with this health scandal, scientists call for immediate awareness and a tightening of international standards. There is an urgent need for brands to clearly display the chemical components used and for women to be made aware of the risks of these cosmetic products in order to prevent an increase in cancer cases over the long term.
