Port-au-Prince, November 5, 2025.- The Representative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Haiti, Eric Voli Bi, met on Tuesday, November 4, 2025 with the Protector of the Citizen, Jean Wilner Morin. Together, they discussed ways to strengthen human rights protection, freedom of expression and peace education in a national context marked by social tensions and security challenges.
UNESCO and the Office for the Protection of the Citizen (OPC) are working together to advance the culture of peace and the defence of fundamental rights. During a working meeting held in Port-au-Prince, UNESCO Representative Eric Voli Bi and Citizen Protector Jean Wilner Morin addressed several key themes: freedom of expression, the safety of journalists, the right to identity and civic training for young people.
The two institutions identified several avenues for collaboration, including the establishment of a human rights training centre, the organization of a national symposium on mediation and the strengthening of youth awareness of responsible citizenship. « Let us insist on education for the peaceful resolution of conflicts. It's a long-term job that must start at school. »stressed Eric Voli Bi, stressing prevention through education.
For his part, Mr. Jean Wilner Morin reaffirmed the commitment of the OPC to ensure fair protection for all: « We want to offer equal protection to all citizens, both in the capital and in the regions. » It welcomed the commitment of UNESCO to support national initiatives to promote peace and protect rights.
This meeting marks an important step in the cooperation between the two institutions, which intend to maintain a permanent and constructive dialogue in support of human rights, justice and stability in Haiti.
