Quebec City, 14 January 2026.- Fragmented by a dramatic fall in voting intentions and record unpopularity, Quebec Premier François Legault announced his resignation. This decision came at a time when the Coalition futur Québec (CAQ) ranked last among the voting intentions, according to a recent Pallas Data poll published for Qc125 and L

According to this survey, the CAQ finds itself on a par with Québec solidaire at the bottom of the electoral ranking, while 75% of respondents say they have an unfavourable impression of François Legault. A massive disavowal that accelerated the caquist leader's decision to leave his office, in a context of widespread loss of confidence in his leadership and government.

Among the factors that contributed to this political debacle was the highly contested reform of doctors' remuneration, an explosive issue that led to the resignation of two leading ministers: Lionel Carmant, Social Services, and Christian Dubé, Health. These successive departures have accentuated the image of a government in crisis, unable to rally public opinion around its reforms.

François Legault entered politics in 1998 under the leadership of former Pequist Prime Minister Lucien Bouchard, and for more than two decades he has marked the Quebec political scene. His resignation now opens a period of uncertainty at the head of the CAQ, a few months before the elections scheduled for October, and revives speculation on the recomposition of the Quebec political landscape.
