Dushanbe, May 26, 2026.- On behalf of the Haitian government, the Minister of the Environment, Valéry Fils-Aimé, strongly reaffirmed Haiti's commitment to equitable, inclusive and inclusive management of water resources at the 4th High-level International Conference on the Water Decade in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, on May 26, 2026. In the face of the international community, he recalled the absolute urgency of secure access to water as the essential pillar for stability, prosperity and peace in the world, especially for the most vulnerable nations.
It is a message conveyed by the urgency and political responsibility that the Minister of the Environment of Haiti, Valéry Fils-Aimé, delivered this Tuesday, May 26, 2026. Speaking officially on behalf of the Head of the Haitian Government, Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, the Minister has positioned the Republic of Haiti at the centre of global discussions on climate resilience.
In an unequivocal statement, the Minister recalled a fundamental truth that resonates with the news of his country: « No society can claim stability, prosperity or lasting peace without ensuring fair and secure access to water ». For Haiti, a country structurally exposed to climate shocks, water control and fair sharing are not only ecological, but are the cornerstone of national and human security.
Supported by the United Nations General Assembly, the Dushanbe initiative should, according to the Haitian representative, act as a catalyst. The Minister called on the international community to move from promises to deeds by accelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to water and sanitation. The protection of the most vulnerable populations in the face of environmental disruptions must remain, in his view, the top priority of global climate finance.
Focus on the 4th Dushanbe Conference: The World Water Action Hub
The 4th High-level International Conference on the Water Decade (2018-2028), held from 25 to 28 May 2026 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, is part of the historic framework of the « Dushanbe Water Process ».
Initiated by the Government of Tajikistan in partnership with the UN, this global event marks a crucial step towards the United Nations Water Conference of 2026 (co-organized by Senegal and the United Arab Emirates).
The objective is to evaluate and transform into concrete actions the 800 or so voluntary commitments of the Water Action Agenda adopted in New York in 2023. It also launched the first consultations for the Final Conference of 2028, which would take stock of the Decade.
Co-chaired by Tajik Prime Minister Kohir Rasulzoda and UN Deputy Secretary General Li Junhua, the summit brings together heads of state, ministers from around the world, financial institutions and scientists to design solutions to the acceleration of water crises (dry, glacier and flood).
