Paris, 25 July 2025.- In a letter addressed to Mahmoud Abbas and released on 24 July 2025, President Emmanuel Macron announced that France will officially recognize the State of Palestine at the UN General Assembly next September. True to his commitment to a just peace, the French President calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the disarmament of Hamas and the construction of a viable, demilitarized and peaceful Palestinian State with Israel.
In a context marked by the bloody war in Gaza and the diplomatic impasse in the Middle East, President Emmanuel Macron poses a major political act: the recognition of Palestine as a sovereign State by France. This decision, announced in writing to Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority, will be formalized at the UN rostrum in September. For Paris, this is a decisive lever to relaunch the two-State solution peace process.
In his letter, the French President welcomes the commitments made by Mahmoud Abbas, including his commitment to disarm Hamas, to release the hostages still detained and to hold general elections in 2026. It stresses the importance of a Palestinian State fully exercising its sovereign functions in Gaza and the West Bank, within a demilitarized framework, as a guarantee of security for all the peoples of the region.
Emmanuel Macron insists on the urgency of a ceasefire in Gaza, where civilians pay a heavy price. It calls for massive humanitarian assistance, the security of the territory and its reconstruction. For him, peace requires coordinated action between Palestinians, Israelis, Europeans and international partners, with France on the front line.
France will also co-chair with Saudi Arabia an international conference at the United Nations aimed at a peaceful settlement of the Palestinian question. Macron wants to mobilize a diplomatic coalition to make concrete progress towards peace, giving hope to the Israeli and Palestinian peoples. He says: « There is no alternative. Peace is possible. »
With strong words « trust, clarity and commitment » The Head of State concludes his correspondence with a call for unity in the face of violence and terrorism. Through this historic initiative, Emmanuel Macron intends to restore a political perspective to the Middle East, where peace seemed increasingly inaccessible.
