The Haitian police arrested a suspect, this Monday, August 24, 2026, in the murder of Michael Gallagher, a 63-year-old American in charge of the security of the Tobacco Company As It Dos S.A. in Port-au-Prince.
Found stabbed in his office on Wednesday, Gallagher was reportedly killed in a flight involving approximately 9 million gourdes, or nearly $69,000. According to a police source quoted by the Miami Herald, the suspect was working with the victim and the alleged weapon of the crime, a knife, was found. Thirteen employees were initially detained. Investigators are now looking at whether other people are involved in what the police present as a possible conspiracy.
Gallagher had been working in Haiti for 14 years, where he had also been involved in security operations and relief efforts following the 2010 earthquake. His family described him as a man attached to Haiti and deeply committed to protecting others.
