N的Djamena, March 24, 2026.- More than 500 Chadian police officers and gendarmes will soon be deployed to Haiti as part of the Force de répression des gangs (FRG), a multinational mission supported by the United Nations. The objective is to support local forces in the face of the rise of armed groups, particularly in Port-au-Prince.

According to security sources, Chadian forces are currently in preparation and training phase prior to dispatch. This step aims to adapt them to the realities of the Haitian terrain, especially to combat in urban areas. An assessment mission could also be sent upstream to analyse the response conditions.

The operation is coordinated by the Chadian authorities in response to an international call to strengthen the fight against insecurity in Haiti.

The FRG, authorized by the United Nations, must include approximately 5,500 soldiers and police from several countries. It should be fully operational from April 2026. The main mission of this force will be to conduct direct operations against armed gangs that control much of the Haitian capital.

For several years, Haiti has been facing an increase in violence linked to armed groups, responsible for many crimes, including abductions and attacks on public infrastructure. Despite the presence of the former MMSS, the means deployed so far have been considered insufficient to restore security in a sustainable manner.

The arrival of new troops, including those from Chad, is therefore part of an attempt to strengthen the capacity to respond to a crisis that continues to weaken the Haitian state.
