Middle East, February 28, 2026.- Tensions are intensifying in the Middle East after strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran on Saturday, February 28. Named « Lion roaring » and « Epic Fury »The operation would aim to weaken Iranian military capabilities and destabilize the existing regime.
Since Florida, US President Donald Trump announced the launch « Major combat operations »claiming to neutralize Iranian missiles and « to nullify » the Navy of the Islamic Republic. He also called on the Iranian population and armed forces to turn against the authorities.
In response, Tehran targeted several United States and allied military bases in the region, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Israel.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the operation« preventive attack »to eliminate what he considers a direct threat from the Iranian regime.
No official balance sheet has yet been provided. According to journalists at Agence France-Presse, Internet access is reportedly cut off in Iran and important smoke plumes have been observed in Tehran.
Recall that the Iran-American conflict began in 1979, after the Islamic Revolution in Iran, Islamist students stormed the American embassy in Tehran and held 52 diplomats hostage for 444 days, causing a breakdown in diplomatic relations between Washington and Tehran in 1980.
Tensions are intensifying over the years: in 2002, US President George W. Bush classed Iran in « The axis of evil », and in 2019, the Trump administration designates the Revolutionary Guardians as a foreign terrorist organization.
At the same time, there are serious concerns about Iran's nuclear programme. In the early 2000s, the revelation of secret nuclear sites fueled Western suspicions. In 2005, Iran revived uranium enrichment, claiming to pursue civilian objectives, while the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported credible information in 2011 on activities related to the development of an explosive nuclear device.
