Diplomatic crisis around Greenland: Washington appoints special envoy, Copenhagen reacts strongly

Copenhagen, 22 December 2025.- On Monday, 22 December, Denmark announced the upcoming convening of the United States Ambassador, Kenneth A. Howery, following the appointment by President Donald Trump of a special envoy for Greenland, a decision deemed unacceptable by the Danish authorities, who denounce an infringement of their sovereignty.

US President Donald Trump revived tensions between the United States and Denmark by appointing Jeff Landry, the Republican Governor of Louisiana, as a special envoy for Greenland. According to Trump, Landry will understand the island's strategic importance for American security and commit to defending the interests and security of the United States, as well as « the survival of our allies » and the whole world. On X, Landry himself declared that it was an honour for him to contribute to « make Greenland part of the United States »cause serious concern in Copenhagen and relaunch the debate on the sovereignty of the island.

Denmark has responded firmly to this initiative. Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen described the appointment as « totally unacceptable » and will announce the convening of the American Ambassador, Kenneth A. Howery. This approach recalls that Danish and Greenlandic representatives must be involved in any discussion of the security or defence of Greenland, which enjoys broad autonomy, and denounces any attempt by the United States to engage directly with Nuuk.

Greenland, with a population of about 57,000, remains a strategic territory for Denmark and the United States because of its geopolitical position and natural resources. The Danish media reported that Washington is trying to establish direct contacts with the Greenland government, which is a circumvention of customary diplomatic practices. This crisis underscores the importance of respecting Danish sovereignty and established procedures, while highlighting growing tensions in the Arctic, where strategic interests and international security are closely linked.
