The Confederation of Football of North America, Central America and the Caribbean (Concacaf) today announced the rejection of the proposal of FIFA President Gianni Infantino to open up part of the World Cup's commercial property to private investors. Meeting in special session, the 41 members of the organization expressed their opposition to the draft resolution, considering that it raises important governance issues.
In a statement, Concacaf states, according to the media team, that its member associations are concerned about the lack of a transparent procedure, the timetable deemed too hasty and the fact that this initiative was not subject to review or approval by the relevant FIFA bodies. The organisation also recalls that the interest of football must take precedence over any commercial logic.
This position comes a few hours after UEFA, supported by its 55 member federations, raised the possibility of boycotting a future World Cup if this project were to continue. While declaring itself open to dialogue with FIFA, Concacaf reaffirms that the future of the competition must remain under the control of the football community.
