Brasília, 18 December 2025.- On Wednesday, 17 December, the Brazilian Congress adopted a controversial law to reduce the penalties for the attack on 8 January 2023 in Brasília, including that of former President Jair Bolsonaro, sentenced to 27 years in prison for attempted coup d'état. The measure, supported by the conservative majority, could reduce its sentence to just over two years.

This initiative triggered massive demonstrations throughout the country and was strongly criticized. Although the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate validated the text, President Lula announced his intention to veto it. However, this veto may be reversed by a vote of Congress.

Moreover, the law would also allow parole for several Bolsonaro supporters convicted of their involvement in the violence of January 2023, during which Brazilian institutions were assaulted.
