Tabarre, 14 January 2026.- On Wednesday, 14 January, the Office d'Insurance Accidents du Travail, Maladie et Maternité (OFATMA) announced the mobilization of 800 million gourdes, following a memorandum of understanding signed with the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), with a view to paying the arrears of payments accumulated between December 2024 and September 2025. This decision comes after the settlement of more than 571 million gourdes of debts inherited from previous years.
In a press release released on 14 January, the OFATMA states that this agreement with the MEF aims to ensure the prompt settlement of claims owed to caregivers for the period from 9 December 2024 to 30 September 2025. Since taking office, the Managing Director, the agronomist engineer Vikerson Garnier, has begun a process of financial consolidation that has enabled more than 571 million gourdes of debt incurred between 2018 and 2024, reflecting the will of the new administration to restore the credibility of the institution.
However, OFATMA acknowledges that the application of the tariff structure adopted on 9 December 2024 has seriously weakened the institution. Designed without an in-depth actuarial study and outside the legal requirements, this scale has proved to be legally inapplicable and financially unsustainable, making it difficult to process medical claims submitted by claimants during the period concerned. In response, corrective action was taken by the new management.
Thanks to the agreement reached on 8 December 2025 with the MEF, the release of the 800 million gourdes will allow a gradual, orderly and lasting clearance of the arrears. The OFATMA reaffirms its commitment to ensure continuity of services, to preserve the stability of the health system and to fulfil its obligations to insured persons and providers throughout the national territory.
