Port-au-Prince, September 30, 2025.- In denouncing a "tripartite system" for controlling insecurity, armed gangs, government and the private sector, trade unionist Jacques Anderson Desroches reveals that shipping goods between Port-au-Prince and Miragoâne generates nearly $54 million a month, benefiting some private actors at the expense of opening national roads.
During his participation on Tuesday 30 September in Panel Magik, Jacques Anderson Desroches, a trade union figure in the transportation sector, presented a disturbing picture of the economic mechanisms that fuel the security crisis in the country. According to him, the cabotage transport of goods trucks by sea has become a real gold mine for some private operators.
« Each truck pays $1,500 US to cross by sea between the National Harbour Authority (NPA) and Miragoâne », he revealed. This system would represent $54 million a month, a manna which, according to the trade unionist, directly benefits maritime actors. The latter would have a strong interest in maintaining the insecurity and impracticability of national roads, particularly towards the Great South, in order to preserve this lucrative market.
Jacques Anderson Desroches accuses three main forces of taking advantage of this situation: armed gangs, which lock the roads; government, which tolerates or encourages this status quo; and a part of the private sector, which benefits from this crisis annuity.
However, the trade unionist announces that a consultation is under way between different trade union structures in an attempt to unblock the Great South. He promises that « good news » could be announced soon, in order to end this dependence on maritime cabotage imposed by insecurity.
