Port-au-Prince, January 1, 2026.- The Presidential Council of Transition (CPT) commemorated, this Thursday, January 1 at the Villa d'Accommodation, the 222nd anniversary of the Independence of Haiti, in the presence of the main state authorities. In the context of a continuing security and institutional crisis, the authorities recalled the historical scope of independence and reaffirmed their commitment to national unity, security and the organization of credible elections this year.
The official ceremony brought together the members of the CPT, Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, members of the government, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Haiti, Derby Guerrier, the Director-General of the National Police of Haiti, André Jonas Vladimir Paraison, the President of the Court of Cassation, Jean-Joseph Lebrun, as well as representatives of the diplomatic corps and senior officials of the State.
In his speech, the President of the CPT, Laurent Saint-Cyr, recalled that the Independence of 1804 is the result of a conscious choice for dignity and sovereignty, not a contest of circumstances. He stressed that this legacy today constitutes a collective responsibility, calling on the living forces of the nation to dialogue, serenity and the sense of the State. The CPT coordinator also stressed the ongoing efforts to free the country from the grip of armed groups, a prerequisite for the restoration of security and the organization of free, inclusive and credible elections, as the constitutional deadline of 7 February 2026 approached.
For its part, the government reaffirmed its determination to lead the country towards republican order, institutional stability and the return to full constitutional legitimacy. On the occasion of this commemoration, the authorities called on Haitians, both in Haiti and in the diaspora, to gather around the founding values of 1804 - freedom, unity and responsibility - in order to rebuild national trust and chart a new path for the country.
